What is playable here

Objective
Sera must choose one memory to delete; Leon wants her to preserve the last fully shared memory of their deceased daughter.
Obstacle
The archive requires a large episodic cluster, every other viable option compromises Sera's identity or mission competence, and the chosen memory carries grief that neither former spouse owns alone.
Relationship
Their marriage ended after their daughter's death, but Leon still maintains Sera's memory archive, giving him technical access to memories from the marriage.
Stakes
Coolant failure will corrupt Sera's entire continuity record within minutes. The wrong technical choice may leave her unable to complete evacuation; the chosen personal loss cannot be restored.
Turn
Sera selects their daughter's ninth birthday, the one memory Leon still asks her to recount because his own version has faded, forcing him to choose between overriding her autonomy and helping erase the shared witness he depends on.

Playing age 42-60

Sera

Wants: Exercise control over her own mind by deleting the memory she chooses before the station failure erases everything indiscriminately.

Up against: Leon administers the archive, treats one shared memory of their late daughter as belonging to both of them, and can delay the deletion until the system fails.

Choice prompts

  • Sera approaches the choice as command work until Leon makes the memory personal. Let precision be real competence, not emotional avoidance alone.
  • Do not play choosing the birthday as self-punishment. It can be an assertion that grief does not grant another person ownership of her mind.
  • After deletion, resist signaling what is gone. The absence should emerge from a factual question she can no longer answer experientially.

Playing age 44-62

Leon

Wants: Preserve the shared birthday memory while finding another cluster large enough to stabilize Sera's archive.

Up against: Every alternative removes skills or identity Sera needs to survive, and his technical authority cannot ethically make a personal memory decision for her.

Choice prompts

  • Leon hides pleading inside system language. Track when the technician runs out of neutral terms and the former husband speaks directly.
  • The color and sensory details matter because he is trying to keep a second witness, not because the archive is a video recording.
  • At the confirmation, Leon must put his hand on the system and carry out the deletion he opposes.

One Memory Left

INT. LUNAR RESEARCH STATION MEMORY BAY - NIGHT

Leon has reduced Sera's archive to a grid of memory clusters. One warning remains: delete a high-density cluster within nine minutes or lose the entire continuity record.

Leon

Eight minutes, forty seconds. We need one cluster above eighteen units.

Sera

Delete the western docking simulation.

Leon

Four units. And you need it to fly the ascent capsule.

Sera

The capsule flies itself.

Leon

Everything flies itself until the station loses power and asks a human why.

Sera

Then delete university. I remember the degree. I do not need the corridors.

Leon

Eleven. The archive needs one large event or it starts cutting connective tissue on its own.

Sera

You designed a system that survives by becoming sentimental.

Leon

High-density recall is sensory, relational, and repeated. The system did not make your life sentimental.

Leon expands four amber clusters. Their labels are spare and private: SEA WALL, LAUNCH ONE, LIO NINE, LAST WINTER.

Sera

Open the candidate list.

Leon

Sea Wall is nineteen. You built half your risk response there.

Sera

Launch One.

Leon

Twenty-three, but it anchors your flight identity. Delete it and the medical model cannot predict what else detaches.

Sera

Last Winter.

Leon

The separation?

Sera

You moved out. It snowed. We signed papers. I can reconstruct the rest from receipts.

Leon

Sixteen. Grief was apparently efficient by then.

Sera

Lio Nine is thirty-one. Delete it.

Leon

No.

Sera

That was not a diagnostic response.

Leon

Choose Sea Wall. We can retrain your emergency response during transit.

Sera

In a failing ascent capsule? You just argued the opposite.

Leon

I am revising the risk.

Sera

You are revising the owner. Lio Nine is my memory.

Leon

I was there.

Sera

For the cake. You left before the planetarium show because the station called.

Leon

I came back.

Sera

After she slept. The paper stars were on the floor, and you asked me to tell you everything.

Leon

You remember the whole room. The projector clicking, her green crown, the way she moved Saturn because she said rings should not be lonely.

Sera

You have asked for that description every year since she died. The first time it was the crown. Last year you wanted to know whether she laughed before or after the stars came on.

Leon

Because each year my version loses something. I remember arriving after the candles and finding silver paper under the sofa. Everything else comes from what you told me, and your version does not fade.

Sera

Mine loses me. I enter that room and feel the tape sticking to my fingers, the hot projector, her hair against my cheek. Then I spend the next week measuring everything I chose after it against one child who had three months left.

Leon

She was alive in that room. She was not a countdown, and neither of us knew what the scan would show on Monday. Do not turn the last day she was simply nine into a symptom because surviving it hurts.

Sera

Do not turn my mind into your archive because you are afraid to be the only witness.

Leon

I am afraid to be the last person who remembers her badly.

Sera

Then remember badly. Memory is not a duty we can assign to whoever has the best storage.

Leon

There may be another way if I partition Launch One.

Sera

Temperature?

Leon

Critical in six minutes. Partitioning needs twelve.

Sera

Select Lio Nine.

Leon

The protocol requires two confirmations. I can decline the second as medical custodian.

Sera

Then the archive corrupts, and you lose every version of me along with that room. Is that care or a threat?

Leon

I do not know.

Sera

Good. Start there.

Leon

Before I confirm, tell me the crown was green.

Sera

If I tell you so you can preserve it, you make a copy in yourself and call that respect.

Leon

I already remember green. I need to know I did not invent it.

Sera

It was green. She drew a silver door on the front because every crown should have an exit. Confirm.

Leon places his hand beside Sera's on the console. The LIO NINE cluster contracts to a point and disappears; coolant demand falls as the remaining archive steadies.

Leon

Confirmed.

Sera

I know there was a birthday. I know she was nine. I cannot see the room.

Leon

The archive is stable.

Sera

That was not what I asked.

The evacuation lights return. Leon closes the candidate list without opening the surviving clusters, and Sera disconnects herself from the archive.

Leon

No. It was not.
