Nell

Objectifs: Get the story straight before her mother phones anyone, and make her see that the removal was worth it.

Obstacles: Telling it in order means admitting the hedge photo got to her, and she would rather be a rock.

Choix de jeu

  • Nell narrates like a witness. Where does the precision crack and the feeling get through?
  • Choose what she actually wants from her mother: a laugh, a ruling, or just no phone call.
  • Sana's message is the turn. How does Nell's voice change when she quotes someone being kind?

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Nell turns her phone over, checks it, and puts it back face down. She pulls out a chair for her mother and waits until she sits.

Nell

Okay. In order. Because you'll get it wrong at Aunty Jo's and I'd rather you got it wrong accurately.

Seven forty two, Monday. Maddie posts a photo of the geography trip. I am in it. I am not at my best in it. I look like I'm being arrested by a hedge. Fine. Seven forty four, Ruby replies with the crying laughing one, eleven times. Also fine, that's just Ruby, she communicates in weather.

Seven fifty, Maddie changes the group name to 'Hedge Watch'. I say nothing. I'm dignified. Eight oh three, someone, and I have my theories, crops the photo so it's just my face and the hedge and makes it the group icon. Still nothing from me. I am a rock. I go and have a yoghurt.

Then at nine Sana says, 'Leave her alone, she was helping Mr Dunn with the tent.' Which is true. And Maddie says, 'Nobody asked you, Sana,' and Ruby does the laughing one again, and that was the bit. That was the bit, Mum. Not the hedge. I don't care about the hedge. I typed, 'She's the only one of you who's ever been nice to anyone, and she's right about the tent,' and I sent it, and then I put the phone face down and ate the rest of your yoghurt as well. Sorry about that.

Nine oh six. Removed. No message. Just the little grey line. 'Maddie removed Nell.'

So no, I don't want you to ring her mother. I've made a new group. It's got two people in it. Sana's already changed the name to Hedge Watch, which I've decided is funny now. Can I have a yoghurt.
