Stakes: The locks change within days. If they leave the real reason unspoken, an accidental six-week pause becomes a permanent ending neither consciously chose.
Turn: Noor reveals two canceled locksmith appointments and Jamie admits waiting to be asked back, moving them from practical excuses toward a new conversation that does not depend on secret access.

Noor

Wants: Complete the exchange cleanly and learn whether Jamie kept the key for the same reason Noor did.

Up against: Noor scheduled a lock change and a move, so every indirect question now has a deadline and risks sounding like an invitation to undo the breakup.

Choice prompts

Use the inventory as armor. Noor can discuss chargers and mugs with perfect control because the key cannot be made ordinary.
Let the canceled locksmith appointments reveal hope before Noor is ready to call it hope.
The coffee invitation is a small invitation to finish the conversation they skipped, not a reunion.

Jamie

Wants: Return the belongings without admitting that keeping Noor's key preserved the possibility of being asked back.

Up against: Jamie has brought everything except the key, and the practical excuses collapse once Noor reveals both locks are about to change.

Choice prompts

Jamie has rehearsed a brisk exchange and is thrown by how much Noor remembers about each object.
Treat the family-emergency history as a real reason for keeping access, then notice when it stops being the complete reason.
When the keys finally meet on the table, let giving up access create room for a more honest request.

INT. NOOR'S APARTMENT - EVENING

Jamie sets a grocery bag beside a taped box. Noor checks the box against a list, careful not to look at the small brass key still attached to Jamie's ring.

Jamie

The blue mug is in the bag because it would not fit without threatening the lamp.

Noor

You could keep the mug. You are the one who likes it.

Jamie

It says World's Okayest Dentist. I am not a dentist.

Noor

Neither was my aunt. That was the architecture of the joke.

Jamie

Right. Well. Mug, lamp, gray sweater, two chargers, the book I pretended to finish. That should be everything.

Noor

The green charger is mine.

Jamie

You said all USB-C cables become communal property after three months.

Noor

That ruling was issued by the relationship. The court has dissolved.

Jamie

Take the cable, Noor. I am not appealing.

Noor

I have your raincoat too. It was behind the door.

Jamie

I wondered where that went. It rained four times, and I decided weather was being personal.

Noor

You could have texted.

Jamie

The last text I sent was, 'Fine, then we are done.' Asking about a raincoat felt like weak follow-through.

Noor

You also wrote 'for now.'

Jamie

Autocorrect.

Noor

From what?

Jamie

From a less dignified sentence. Is this really the last box?

Noor

Except the key.

Jamie

The key. Yes. I thought it was in the bowl.

Noor

It is on your ring. Between the bottle opener and the tiny red shoe.

Jamie

You can identify a key at six feet now?

Noor

I cut it myself after you locked yourself out in socks. The teeth are crooked.

Jamie

I kept it in case you needed me to get in. Plants, packages, gas smell. Normal emergency things.

Noor

You have not watered the plant since we broke up.

Jamie

It looked judgmental before. I assumed it would get worse.

Noor

Did you change your lock?

Jamie

The landlord charges one hundred and eighty.

Noor

Did you ask the landlord?

Jamie

Did you change yours?

Noor

The building uses a special cylinder.

Jamie

That sounded imported from a property-management email.

Noor

The locksmith comes tomorrow at nine. My new roommate moves in at noon.

Jamie

New roommate. Fast.

Noor

Roommate, not replacement. I cannot cover this place alone, and the train leaves Friday.

Jamie

You took the placement?

Noor

For three months. I was going to tell you before you said we were done.

Jamie

I said we were done because you had packed a suitcase and never asked if I wanted to come.

Noor

You had just signed a lease. I thought asking would make your choice a test.

Jamie

So you made it for me, and I made the breakup for both of us. Efficient.

Noor

I did ask once, in a draft. I wrote, 'There is a spare room near the theater if you want to see it.' Then I stared at 'if' until it sounded insulting.

Jamie

A question in your drafts is not a question I can answer. I was at home waiting for you to risk one uncomfortable minute.

Noor

I deleted it because you had spent months making that apartment feel permanent. I thought asking you to leave would prove I never listened.

Jamie

I signed the lease because you kept calling the placement a maybe. I thought permanence would give you something to come back to, not somewhere you were forbidden to leave.

Noor

I booked the locksmith the next morning. Then I canceled. Rebooked two weeks later. Canceled again.

Jamie

Why?

Noor

First, because your father was having tests and I wanted you to have somewhere to go. Then because I kept listening for the lock.

Jamie

I kept yours because I thought you would ask me back when being angry got tiring. Then too much time passed, so emergency planning sounded better.

Noor

Did you ever come to the door? I heard someone in the hall the night before my birthday and waited without moving.

Jamie

I made it to the second floor with a cake. Then I decided using the key would be unforgivable and knocking would be pathetic. I ate it on the stairs.

Noor removes a second brass key from a pocket and sets it beside the box. Jamie slowly adds Noor's key.

Noor

I still have yours too.

Jamie

Two people with unrestricted access and no idea whether they are allowed to text. Very secure system.

Noor

The locks change. We have coffee tomorrow, somewhere public, and finish the sentence without keys.

Jamie

Coffee is not getting back together.

Noor

No. It is asking the question before either of us answers it.
